NatureLand Enrichment report

Hi my name is Frayja and I'm going to talk to you about how I helped NatureLand Zoo. The animal I chose to make an enrichment activity for was the meerkats. We first had to study what our animals liked doing and what they eat in their natural habitats. I chose the meerkats because they are the newest animals at NatureLand. For my enrichment idea I used an old vacuum cleaner, driftwood, carrots and parsnips. Straight away they started digging at the sand to reach the food but they soon gave up and jumped on the top. They had figured out there was a lid but were challenged to open it. It was funny . The meerkats really liked it. I felt that Natureland appreciated me and the Meerkats did too. Jo, the keeper was really excited about mine so we did it last. First they were a little nervous but then they became very curious, excited and happy. I really enriched their lives!

Mask Parade Preparations

At the moment the CWSA art group have been working on the mask parade. The mask parade theme is One Earth Global Creative Spirit. We have given each class a design of a mask with a country that the mask comes from. Every class that has finished their masks have had a awesome result a lot of hard work has paid off. We have been very lucky and NIWA has given us a weather balloon which we are going to use as a globe.

Guest Speaker talks Photos!!

This week in CWSA a Portrait Photoghrapher came into our session. Her name was Kirstin and we learned heaps from her. What we talked about ranged from taking good photos to the technical side of a camera. She gave us many tips and hints for taking great photos for many events including action, scenery and important events like weddings. We then went out and took autumn photos, the colours were truly effective.

Worm Farm up and Running!

A worm farm is now part of the lunch time routine at Enner Glynn School. Today the enviro group worked with Mr Hands to get a new worm farm up and running. This is one step towards reducing our waste in an environmentally friendly way. The castings will be used as fertiliser for our edible gardens which are already in progress. Children crowded around today to have a close look at the worm farm and how it works, of course the worms were well fed to on apple cores, banana skins and crusts.!
Good Work Enviro group! and Mr Hands!
Lots of great learning took place,
*The first thing we did was we soaked the cardboard, we had fun doing that because lots of us got wet!
*The second thing we did was put the worms in with the soil and scraps (YUCK!).
* The third thing that we did was practicing wheeling it down to the rubbish bin by room 3.
*And now at lunch times we each have turns at making sure no one puts the wrong food in the bin.
The things we learnt were:
*That there is a certain type of worm for a worm farm - these are called tiger worms.
*That worms do not eat meat they only eat some fruit (not citrus food like oranges etc.) and vegetables, they are herbivores.
*The worms waste is called castings and that is what we use as fertaliser.
*The worms will even eat paper because it is made from trees!
*Each worm can produce over 1500 babies in one year.
*Tiger worms eat their own body weight each day (WOW!)
our next challenge is going to be deciding how to best use the wonderful veges from our garden - any ideas would be appreciated!

Helping Naturelands Animals

Year 4 CWSA have been trying to make it more enjoyable for animals at Natureland Zoo. We have the privilege to design an activity to enrich the animals lives. So far it has been successful. We all have a number of ideas that will help them learn strategies and thinking skills.
